After School Club Magic - Magic School with Chris Whitelock

After School Club magic

This term, I’ve been working with students at an After School Club. I’ve been teaching magic there once a week for the entire term, and by the Christmas holidays, I’ll have given lessons to a total of 56 Year 7 and 8 students, though not all at once! The students have been split into smaller groups and each group has a total of three one-hour lessons. Every week I teach the groups new tricks which can be anything from card tricks, coin magic, rope tricks to mind reading.

Some of the students have done really well – I’m excited about where they could take magic in the future. I’ve had a lot of feedback from the teachers who tell me that the kids have loved it and are constantly trying to show them the tricks they’ve learnt.

In fact, these lessons have been so successful that the school has already booked me to come back for the Spring term when they’ll open the lessons up to the entire school.

Learning more than just magic

My magic lessons aren’t just teaching the students how to do a few tricks. The benefits go a lot further than that. Doing magic improves your social skills and encourages social interaction. It also enhances listening and learning skills, as well as developing patience – you need to be patient and dedicated in order to keep practising the tricks until you get them right!

Magic lessons are great for After School Clubs because magic is something we can all do. Not everyone can play football or learn a musical instrument, but everyone can learn a magic trick.

So magic lessons are a great way of keeping kids entertained in your After School Club. My rates depend on the number of lessons, the number of students per lesson and the amount of travelling I’d need to do to get to your school, but the cost could work out as low as under £10 per pupil per lesson. Included in the cost are props, materials and instructions which the students can keep, so they can practice the tricks they’ve learnt as much as they want to.

If you are looking for unusual activities for your After School Club, call me on 07747 141 238 to find out how I can help.
