At the weekend I took my own camera crew (well, my videographer) to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire to film some close up magic to give you a good idea of what I do.
I regularly perform magic for guests at Hatfield House weddings – on Saturday I did my fifth of the year! It’s an incredible venue for weddings, and you can chose between the Ridings Barn which gives you a more modern area, or the Old Palace which was once used as a nursery for Henry VIII’s children, and was where Queen Elizabeth I held her first Council of State.
The Old Palace has one of the best examples of medieval brickwork in the UK, and still has most of its original roof timbers. The paintings and tapestries on the wall, and even the brickwork itself, provide a wonderfully romantic setting for a wedding breakfast. Parties also have access to the Old Palace Garden, with its Tudor-style, formal Knot Garden. Hatfield House has a licence for civil ceremonies, and people who get married there say it really does feel like they’re taking part in a royal wedding!
I was booked to perform at a wedding that was held in the Old Palace and the bride and groom kindly allowed me to film my magic. The wedding ceremony was held in the Old Palace itself, and while the room was being prepared for the meal, I entertained guests at the drinks reception in the garden.
Afterwards, I went to the Stable Yard to film more magic with members of the public. What I love about doing close up magic is that you get to see the expressions and smiles on people’s faces as the trick unfurls. The interaction with people is what makes my job such a joy.
