Whether you are holding a Christmas party, wedding reception, corporate event, private party or holding cabaret night, you will need to take this into consideration when booking your magician. The style of magician needed for a large corporate event or cabaret evening will not be the same as the one you wish to entertain a small family party, and styles vary greatly. For example, if you’re planning an event where you’re going to have 20 or more guests standing around as part of a wedding reception, you need to hire a magician to entertain them with astounding close-up magic. This is a fantastic way to break the ice and get the conversation flowing between both sides of the family. A single, close-up magician working in a mix-and-mingle style is usually able to entertain around 125 people over a two-hour period.
The first thing you should do is search for testimonials from customers who have used the magician for their event. Independent testimonials will give you a great idea of what to expect. Once you are happy with the feedback you have read, then you need to visit the magician’s website and review their terms and conditions and make sure that you are confident in what they have stated. You will also need to check that they have up-to-date public liability insurance and you can request copies of this if your event is being held in a public property/grounds.
It is always best to be organised when it comes to booking your entertainment, after all, professional magicians are often booked up months in advance. It is therefore strongly suggested that once you have chosen your magician that you make your booking between 12 weeks and 18 months before the event.
The price will depend on a number of factors such as date, number of guests attending, location, duration of the performance and type of performance required for the event. You can expect to pay £300+ for a full-time, professional magician with celebrity clientele and lots of great reviews. If you break that down, it’s probably the equivalent of £3–£7 per person (depending on the number of guests attending).
